Breast reconstruction after mastectomy can be done immediately or delayed, depending on your needs and surgical plan. It’s a major procedure requiring general anesthesia and a 2–3 day hospital stay. Techniques include silicone implants with or without tissue expansion, autologous flaps from abdominal or back tissue, and sometimes fat grafting to create or enhance the breast.
Occasionally after a breast augmentation, the breasts may begin to feel firmer or appear to rise on the chest. This is likely a result of capsular contraction. Scar tissue which normally forms around the breast implant can tighten causing breast firmness or malposition. This can be treated with a capsulotomy or surgical relaxing of the capsule or scar tissue. This might be an opportunity to change the size of the implant or the material that makes it up - saline or silicone.
Occasionally, male breast tissue persists after puberty. This is called gynecomastia. After ascertaining that there are no medical problems causing this condition, Dr. Fater can utilize a variety of techniques to remove the extra tissue and restore a more masculine contour to the chest. This is occasionally accomplished with liposuction but may require direct excision of glandular tissue with skin reduction. The procedure can be performed under sedation in our accredited private in-office surgical suite or at Cape Cod Hospital.
Explant surgery removes breast implants for medical reasons, complications, or personal preference. Common reasons include capsular contracture, implant rupture, or a desire to return to your natural size. Dr. Fater tailors each procedure to your needs, with options to combine removal with a breast lift or implant exchange. The surgery is performed under sedation in our accredited in-office suite or under general anesthesia at Cape Cod Hospital. Most patients resume normal activities within one to two weeks.
Pregnancy, weight gain, and aging all contribute to breast ptosis or sagging. A breast lift (mastopexy) can remove the excess skin which is causing the sagging while preserving the breast volume. The scars are inconspicuously placed. Breast lifts are occasionally combined with breast augmentation to tighten the skin envelope while adding volume. These procedures are commonly performed in our private in-office accredited surgical suite under sedation. Patients can return to work in a week.
Women with large breasts often suffer from a variety of chronic issues including back pain, neck strain, shoulder strap furrows, and rashes or infections under the breasts. Their breast size may prevent them from enjoying physical activities or finding clothes that fit properly. Breast reduction removes excess breast tissue while leaving a “perkier” result with inconspicuous scars. Nipple sensitivity and the ability to breastfeed are typically preserved. The surgery is performed at Cape Cod Hospital under general anesthesia.
